The Red Sox have been involved in some of the
most noted trades in baseball history. Trading Babe Ruth (actually selling him)
to the Yankees for $125,000 and a $300,000 loan is universally acknowledged as
the worst transaction in the books. On the other hand, in 1935, the Sox acquired
Jimmie Foxx from the Philadelphia A's along with Johnny
Marcum, for Gordon Rhodes, George Savino, and $150,000. On the other hand,
in 1972 they sent away pitcher Sparky Lyle to the Yankees for Danny Cater and
Mario Guerrero. On the other hand they acquired Pedro Martinez from the Expos in
1997 for Tony Armas and Carl Pavano.
To win a
Plymouth River Eels prize package, name the 2 pitchers involved in these
two midseason deals: In a deadline deal in 1990, the Red Sox traded away
prospect Jeff Bagwell, a future Rookie of the Year, batting champion, MVP, and
likely Hall of Famer for a relief pitcher who would pitch (and not very well) in
only 15 games that fall before leaving for free agency. On the other hand, in a
1997 deadline deal, the Red Sox acquired mainstays of the 2004 championship
season Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe for a relief pitcher who would go on to do
very little for Seattle and 3 subsequent teams.
