BASEBALL CLINIC   The baseball clinic will be an overview session to help youngsters prepare for the upcoming season. Among our instructors will be baseball professionals Jason LaRocque, Devon Teeple, and Brian Trupiano.

LaRocque was the captain of the Harvard baseball team and helped lead the Crimson to three consecutive Ivy League Championships and a trio of NCAA Regional berths. Jason worked in the scouting department of the Boston Red Sox and participated as a coach in Major League Baseball's International Envoy program, working with amateur and professional players in China and Japan. He has also coached with Headfirst Baseball. Jason was the bullpen catcher for the Boston Red Sox in 2005 and 2006.

Teeple was a standout pitcher for York College in Nebraska and was named 1st team All Conference in the MCAC and was York's College Athlete of the Year. Along with leading the York College Panthers in games played, games started, innings pitched, strike outs, (1997-2001) and Wins and ERA, (2001), "Devo" became the first York College Panther to sign a professional contract, signing with the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League in 2001. The southpaw pitched for the Grizzlies as well as the River City Rascals.

Trupiano grew up around baseball and the broadcast booth, and played at Eastern Connecticut State University and at Rhode Island College. Brian participated in Steve Buckley's Old Time Baseball Game in Cambridge in 2001-04 and played professionally with the Brockton Rox of the Can-Am League.

River Eels merchandise , including official game jerseys, leather seam bracelets, hats, and t-shirts will be available for purchase at the event.

SCIENCE OF BASEBALL
Last summer, MIT launched a pioneering program to advance the study of math and science for middle school aged children using the baseball field as a virtual laboratory. Students spent part of the day in the classroom learning about velocity and vectors and part of the day on the field putting these concepts into "play." Jason LaRocque was an instructor in the program and joins us to deliver some fascinating science facts of America's pastime. (PHOTO A 1965 photo from the laboratory notebooks of MIT Professor Harold "Doc" Edgerton, the father of strobe photography, allows one to observe the physics of a baseball swing.)
