A 'Ground Rule Double' is Hardly a Ground Rule at All…
2007 10
crosley.jpg
The old Crosley Field in Cincinnati had the ground rule written right on the wall
It is widely believed that a ground rule double occurs when a batter hits a fair ball that touches the field of play and subsequently bounces into the stands, thus going out of play. However, this is simply not the case. According to Major League rules 6.09(e) through 6.09(g), when the ball is hit in fair territory and bounces out of play, it is called an automatic double. The batter is subsequently awarded second base.

This rule even applies to a ball hit off the leg of the pitcher into the stands on the first baseline, as New York Yankee outfielder Melky Cabrera found out during the 2007 season. Cabrera hit a baseball right back at Kansas City Royals right-handed pitcher Ryan Braun; the ball ricocheted off of Braun’s leg and sailed over the dugout on the first baseline. Cabrera was awarded second base.

Origins of the Mendoza Line
2007 10
Mendoza
Named for a relatively nondescript major league hitter, the Mendoza Line has become a noteworthy phrase in popular culture to represent the distinction between failure and adequacy. Students’ grades are frequently referenced in terms of the Mendoza Line; the popularity ratings of politicians and entertainers are compared to a Mendoza Line; sales of books and software and fashion and technology products are judged according to a Mendoza Line.

While most baseball fans (and many observers of pop culture) can accurately note that the Mendoza Line represents a batting average of .200, far fewer can tell you just who Mendoza was and how he came to be granted eponymous ownership of said line.

Trivia Winners
2007 10

Through sixteen major league seasons, Tom Candiotti baffled batters with his knuckle ball. He threw strikes on his way to 151 career victories, and he continues to throw strikes...in the bowling alley. This summer Candiotti, radio broadcaster for the Arizona Diamondbacks, was honored with induction into the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame. Candiotti owns a bowling average of better than 200 and rolled a perfect 300 game this past spring. In his honor, the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America has established the Tom Candiotti Youth Bowling Initiative.

Why “River Eels?”
2007 08
thumb_eelimage.jpgPlymouth will always be known as one of the original spots of English settlement in America, which has some locals wondering why Plymouth’s newest baseball team is named something as seemingly unrelated as “the River Eels.”  But Erik Christensen, VP of marketing and communications for Bay Colony Baseball & Athletics, says the team nickname is more relevant that some people realize.

Plymouth River Eels Win Minor League Championship
2007 08
thumb_Batter.JPGThe Plymouth River Eels are undefeated.

The minor league baseball team, sponsored by the parent Plymouth River Eels, finished off a perfect Little League season, winning the championship game this Tuesday by a score of 9-6.

“We got lucky,” a dripping wet coach Stan Cushing said after getting dunked with a water cooler by his players.

While “lucky” seems a bit humble a description for a River Eels team that won all 14 of their games while outscoring their opponents 199 to just 34 along the way, it certainly was an impressive feat for a team comprised of talented players that just happened to fall in Cushing’s lap.
